Vagabond took control of the entire design and lighting budget for the show, overseeing everything from design and delivery through to production and implementation, into a 25,000 seat capacity venue. All of it landed on time, on budget, and to a live broadcast and a live audience.
For BBC Sports Personality of the Year, we designed a stage built to hold a whole year of sporting highlights in one space. A vast central screen anchors the set, flanked by angular sculptural structures that catch the light from every angle. At the heart of the design sits its defining idea: over 2km of LED ribbon strung along hi-tensioned cables, criss-crossing the arena overhead in taut, dynamic lines that emulate the sinews of athletic movement, turning the space between stage and audience into part of the show itself.
The set's real strength is how it moves through the night. Lighting washes shift completely from category to category, cool blues for one moment, a blaze of red, orange and flame for the next, so the design keeps pace with the mood of whichever sport and story is on screen. A live band performs from within the structure itself, keeping the whole show feeling live and immediate rather than built around a static backdrop.
It's a set designed for scale and versatility in equal measure, big enough to fill a packed arena, and flexible enough to reinvent itself again and again across a single broadcast.
